Finding the right wedding photographer is about more than a portfolio — it's about trust, style and feeling at ease. Here's how to choose.
I've photographed weddings in seven countries and more than five hundred times over, and I still tell every couple the same thing: the portfolio gets you in the door, but it's not what makes the day go well.
Start with the style, not the price
Before anything else, look at full galleries — not just highlight reels — from a few photographers whose editing style you're drawn to. Cinematic and candid? Bright and airy? Documentary and unposed, like mine? There's no wrong answer, but there is a wrong fit, and you'll know it when a gallery just feels like "you."
Meet before you book
A phone call or coffee tells you more than a hundred reviews. Is this someone you'd want next to you for ten-plus hours on the most emotional day of your life? Do they listen when you describe your day, or are they just running through a script? Trust your gut here — it's usually right.
Ask about the real logistics
- Are they shooting your wedding personally, or handing it to an associate you haven't met?
- How many photos do you typically receive, and how soon?
- What's the backup plan if they're sick or your date changes?
- Do they know your venue, or your city, well enough to plan around the light?
Local knowledge is underrated
A Springfield or Ozarks photographer who's actually worked your venue — or one like it — already knows where the light turns gold in the evening and where the awkward shadows hide at 2pm. That's not a small thing; it's the difference between chasing good light and already standing in it.
