Why Nathanael Greene / Close Memorial Park is Springfield MO's most-booked outdoor engagement location
Nathanael Greene / Close Memorial Park sits at 2400 S Scenic Ave, Springfield, MO 65807 — on Springfield's south side, right off Scenic Avenue near the Horton Smith Golf Course. Rated 4.9 on Google (4,800+ reviews), it's the single most-booked outdoor engagement photography spot in Springfield for a reason: multiple distinct backdrops within a short walk and ample on-site parking. Within the park you can shoot in the Kickapoo Edge Prairie wildflower meadow, along the banks of Lake Drummond, around the Gray/Campbell Farmstead (1856) log structures, at the Kachel Fountain, through the Butterfly Garden and Hosta Garden, or inside the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden — essentially six engagement sessions in one location.
How I shoot a Nathanael Greene Park engagement — timing, light, movement
For this engagement I planned the timeline the way I plan every Springfield-area park session: start about 2 hours before sunset, move with the light. We began in the open Kickapoo Edge Prairie while the sun was still high — wildflower rim-light, long walking shots, nothing posed. As the light softened we moved to the Lake Drummond trail for 20 minutes along the water, then finished at the Gray/Campbell Farmstead with the last 10 minutes of golden hour hitting the old log structures. Three distinct backdrops, one session, zero re-shoot risk from a single-location bet on weather.

Frequently askedPlanning your own engagement session here?
- Where exactly is Nathanael Greene / Close Memorial Park?
- 2400 S Scenic Ave, Springfield, MO 65807 — on Springfield's south side, right off S Scenic Ave near the Horton Smith Golf Course. GPS pin: 5MCC+CH Springfield, MO. There are multiple on-site parking lots and the park is open daily with free admission for photography.
- Do I need a permit or pay a fee for engagement photos in Nathanael Greene Park?
- For a standard two-person engagement session with one photographer and no large props or temporary structures, you don't need a Springfield-Greene County Park Board permit for the main park areas. The Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden (inside the same park) has a small per-person gate admission that goes to its upkeep. Larger productions, bridal parties, or sessions with tripods and lighting rigs do require a permit — always check parkboard.org for the current rules before booking anything bigger than a two-person shoot.
- What's the best time of year for an engagement session at Nathanael Greene Park?
- Every season works and each one looks different. Late April to early May gives tulips, dogwoods and fresh green in the Botanical gardens. June through August runs hot but gives the Kickapoo Edge Prairie its wildflower peak. Mid-October through early November is the single best window — orange-red maples around Lake Drummond and warm, directional light. Mid-January to February gives moody, stripped-back winter photos with no leaves and lots of texture.
- Which other outdoor Springfield engagement locations do you recommend?
- Alongside Nathanael Greene Park I regularly shoot engagements at the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden (inside the same park), Finley Farms / Ozark Mill, Downtown Springfield's Walnut Street district, Jordan Valley Park, Phelps Grove Park, Lake Springfield and Table Rock Lake.
