Stone Chapel at Drury University — the most beautiful historic chapel exterior in Springfield, MO

Stone Chapel sits at the center of Drury University's historic campus at 900 N Benton Ave, Springfield, MO 65802 — just north of downtown Springfield near Jefferson Park. Built in 1880 from hand-cut Missouri limestone, it's the oldest building on the Drury campus and arguably the single most beautiful stone- chapel exterior in the city. Rated 4.9 on Google (136+ reviews) as a landmark, the chapel's arched wooden doors, ivy-trimmed stone walls, Gothic Revival window tracery and iron bell tower make it one of a very small handful of Springfield MO engagement photo locations that read specifically "historic stone chapel" instead of generic campus architecture.

What it's like to photograph a Drury campus engagement session

A Drury engagement session is really two sessions in one. The Stone Chapel exterior and its surrounding stonework give you a European-feeling chapel-and-ivy portrait set — tight framing, arched doorway shots, hand-on-stone-wall intimacy. Then a short walk across the campus quads brings you to the broader Drury historic district — leafy walkways, century-old classroom buildings, Pearsons Hall and Burnham Hall's brick facades, open campus lawns at golden hour. For this engagement we started at Stone Chapel 90 minutes before sunset, moved along the Drury Lane walkway as the light turned, and finished near the campus sign at Benton and Central with the last golden-hour light. All photographed without disrupting campus life — Drury is a quiet campus most of the year outside of class breaks.

A Springfield engagement photographer who shoots the Drury campus and historic chapels every month

I'm Max Sydko, a Springfield, Missouri wedding and engagement photographer with over seventeen years and 500+ weddings documented across the Ozarks, Branson, Kansas City and seven countries. The Drury University campus and Stone Chapel are favorites of mine for engagement sessions year-round — especially in late April through May when the campus trees are full green, mid-October for the maples around the chapel, and late February for stripped-back, graphic winter frames with bare branches against the limestone. Every wedding collection includes an engagement session; travel to the Drury campus, the historic Walnut Street district downtown, and anywhere else inside Springfield MO is included with no travel fee.

Frequently asked

Planning your own engagement session here?

Where exactly is Stone Chapel at Drury University?
900 N Benton Ave, Springfield, MO 65802 — on the Drury University campus, just north of downtown Springfield near Jefferson Park. GPS pin: 6P97+46 Springfield, MO. The chapel sits inside the central campus quad and is reachable from visitor parking along Drury Lane and Central Street.
Do we need permission to shoot engagement photos at Stone Chapel?
For a standard two-person engagement session with one photographer, Drury's campus is accessible outside of classes and campus events, and Stone Chapel's exterior is typically open to photographers during daylight hours. For interior chapel access, larger bridal-party sessions, or sessions requiring tripods and lighting rigs, you'll want to confirm with Drury University directly through drury.edu before booking.
What's the best time of day for a Drury / Stone Chapel engagement session?
About 90 minutes before sunset. The chapel exterior catches warm, directional stone-wall light at that time, and the campus walkways turn glowing-green at golden hour. If you want the chapel's bell tower lit at dusk for a few final frames, we stay 15 minutes past official sunset.
Can we combine Stone Chapel with the downtown Springfield district?
Yes — this is actually my favorite way to shoot a Drury engagement session. Stone Chapel and the Drury campus for the first 45 minutes, then a short drive (or walk) south into the historic Walnut Street district for brick-and-neon frames during last light and after dark. Two completely different backdrops — a historic 1880s chapel and a Route 66 downtown — in one engagement session.
Which other historic Springfield MO engagement locations do you recommend?
Alongside Stone Chapel at Drury I regularly shoot engagements at the Pythian Castle (gothic exterior), the Gillioz Theatre marquee, Commercial Street (vintage storefronts), Hotel Vandivort (boutique interiors), Finley Farms / Ozark Mill (industrial-riverside) and the Nathanael Greene / Close Memorial Park and Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden on the south side.
